The Robert Koch Institute for disease control noted that Germany had more than 22,000 new cases, bringing the total to over one million.
Worldometer statistics show 15,767 people died from Covid-19 in Germany.
The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care soared from more than 360 in early October to more than 3,500 last week. Germany was almost able to control the spread of the coronavirus in the spring but they were hit by a second wave of infections.
Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, accounts for more than a quarter of cases in Germany, surpassing Bavaria which confirmed 198,000 infections. Meanwhile Berlin has 62,000 cases of Covid-19.
Restrictions will be relaxed a bit during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, allowing meetings to be attended by up to 10 adults. The relaxation runs from December 23 through the New Year. Chancellor Angela Merkel has this week announced that Germany is extending coronavirus restrictions until early January.
Europe's largest economy has closed restaurants, bars, sports facilities and cultural attractions, but schools and shops remain open.
Germany was praised at the start of the pandemic because it was considered successful in reducing the majority of people exposed to the virus.
Several parties at that time tried to research what Germany was doing to reduce the number of deaths from the corona virus.
Some of the efforts taken by Germany to reduce the death rate from the virus are by limiting travel, extending the closure of schools and children's facilities, conducting mass testing, and facilitating adequate health services.
